Sewer Line Maintenance: 9 Habits That Prevent Expensive Repairs

1. Keep grease out of the drain

Pee, poop, and (toilet) paper. 'Flushable' wipes aren't — they don't break down and they're a leading cause of main-line clogs. Feminine products, cotton swabs, and dental floss belong in the trash.

3. Know where your cleanout is

The cleanout is your line's access point and your best friend in an emergency. Find it now — usually a capped pipe near the house or in the basement — so a technician can get to work fast when it matters.

4. Plant trees with the lateral in mind

Before planting, know where your sewer line runs (a camera inspection with locating can map it). Keep thirsty, fast-growing species far from the line.

5. Don't ignore slow drains
